It powers the Comfort Economy. Because you feel constantly anxious and "wired," you spend money on things to numb the feeling—alcohol, junk food, shopping, and streaming services.
The cost is Systemic Inflammation. Having stress hormones "on" all the time ruins your sleep, hurts your heart, weakens your immune system, and literally shrinks the part of your brain used for memory.
It creates a Reactive Society. When everyone is in survival mode, people lose patience and empathy. They become aggressive and short-tempered because they are biologically looking for a fight.
